June 2000

As another examination season draws to a close we all hope that our students have done themselves justice. The hard work of students and staff deserves its reward. For remaining students in school it is worth remembering that examination time arrives sooner than you realise so continued efforts are always important!

Reminders
The 3 remaining training days for this school year are Monday 3 July, Tuesday 4 July and Wednesday 5 July. Students do not attend school on those days.

PTA News
Many thanks to everyone who came to the Quiz night in May. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

Thanks also to everyone who has helped collect tokens for the various schemes. If you have any Tesco ones still at home, please send them in. Nestlé are extending their Box Tops scheme until next year and the Tetley token scheme is going well. We are also now collecting "Focus" and "Do it All" tokens as well as the McVities’ Maths Stuff ones.

You will know from the recent PTA letter about our summer event on 9 July which is run in conjunction with the American Ambassador Programme. Just a reminder that tickets for the summer event are £5 for adults/KES pupils and £3 for under 11’s, and are available from Miss Taylor. This includes entry to the Sealed Knot camp and food. This summer event will be a really good family day out with entertainment for everyone, so please come along and support us.

You will also have received the Summer Raffle tickets by now. The raffle will be drawn on 9 July and the money raised will go towards helping the children in school. This year we have improved the external school environment by adding low-level fencing to keep green areas green and so that pupils can enjoy this, we have provided more benches for use at break and lunchtimes. We have also been able to purchase the new sound and PA system in Bader Hall. This modern system will make an even more professional final product of the many concerts and musical productions which so many of the pupils are involved in, by either taking part or watching.

JC2000
On 31 March 270 pupils, aged from 5 - 15 from 10 local schools, came together to celebrate "JC2000", under the heading of "JC - who’s he?!" Pupils and their teachers from throughout Lichfield had been working for months on drama, dance, songs and rap items based on events in Jesus’ life and parables he taught. Mrs Plant’s Y10 GCSE Drama group showed their dance/drama interpretation of "The Parable of the Sheep and Goats", which was wonderful!

It was a lovely afternoon of celebration which was appreciated by everyone present. We were proud to coordinate and host such an event.

Public Speaking
In April the Michael Fabricant and Arthur Price of England Public Speaking competition was held at the Guildhall. Our team comprised Year 12 students Paul Creaser, Sarah Henshaw and Emma Norman. The team did very well but the event was won with an excellent performance by Netherstowe School.

Poetry Speaking Competition
Five of our students have got through to the final of this competition, which will be held on 13 July. Finalists in the 11 – 13 age group are Bobby Grounds (7D1) and Kirsty Langdell (8D2), and in the 16 - 18 age group — Rebeccah Small, Louise Treherne (both 1204) and Allan Pengelly (1205).

Award-winning Chorister
Charlotte Derry (9G1), who is the head chorister at St Chad’s Church in Lichfield, has been presented with the Bishop’s medal, the highest award in the diocese.

The award followed an examination and was presented to Charlotte in Lichfield Cathedral by the Bishop. Charlotte is the first female chorister in the history of St Chad’s and she performed a solo slot on the school’s CD of Christmas carols, recorded last year. Congratulations!
